The First Clinical Biomedical Base & Bio-incubation Center of South China£ 

The medical biotechnology industry of China has undergone a rapid development these years. In order to create an integrated scientific and clinical base in gene therapy, cellular therapy and development of new biotechnological medicines for China, with the care of Chen Minzhang-former Minister of the State Ministry of Health-and the Biotechnology Leading Group, the China Medical Biotechnology Association (CMBA) and the Guangzhou Development District (GDD) founded the Southern Biotherapy Center ("Bio Center" hereunder) on the basis of GDD in 1997 through repeated negotiation and sufficient demonstration. The Bio Center was formally licensed in September 2001.

The Bio Center is located at GDD, where the nationally sole management style of "4 Districts (i.e., a state-level economic & technical development zone, an export processing zone and a bonded zone) in 1" exists, enjoying a variety of investment services and preferential policies. 70 ones out of the world's Top 500 transnational corporations are already settled at GDD, which is an important industrial base and economic growth point of Guangzhou with all its key economic indicators ranking top among nationwide advanced development zones.

GDD, a traffic pivot of South China, is provided with the most convenient traffic, including extending expressways, urban express lines, Class-1 highways, light railways, ports, wharves, in the close vicinity of an Asian pivot airport-the New Baiyun International Airport.

The Bio Center aims at developing hi-tech biomedicine, undertaking such important functions as project introduction, scientific research and development for the hospital of GDD. By taking advantage of its excellent experimental conditions and rich clinical resources of the hospital, the Center is well progressing with the introduction of hi-tech biomedical projects.

Nationally Unmatched Biotechnological Laboratory
The Center is in possessing of 2 laminar flow cleaning laboratories designed in strict conformity to the national GMP standard. The cell culture laboratory, about 660m2 in size, possesses some functional areas and a range of experimental equipment, including refrigerated warehouse, conservatory, completely sufficient for research in cellular therapy and cell biology. The gene therapy & medicines testing base, around 1,100m2 in size, is equipped with not only a 2 m2 freeze dryers and sialon botting production line, completely adequate for the testing requirements on scientific research, development of new medicines and small lots of biological products.

The Center is cooperating with the American Cellular Therapy Foundation in carrying out cellular transplantation treatment projects to treat malignant disease(malignant muscular dystrophy, myocardial infarction, etc.) that traditional medical methods can't cure. The Center has introduced Guangzhou Aogenkale Biotechnological Company to the GDD hospital for an organ transplantation and treatment project by cooperation, which has treated more than 10 cases since August this year. The Center is also making successful progress in seeking foreign cooperation for biotherapy of tumor, gene diagnostic techniques, development of new medicines and testing.

Since its opening, the Center has been supported by flexible, convenient policies enacted the State Ministry of Health and the GDD Government. Backed up rich technical, clinical resources of CMBA and the GDD hospital, the Center is now tremendously promising. We hope sincerely that scientific researchers, scholars, enterprises, financial and scientific research institutions both at home and abroad come here for project cooperation may enjoy all facilities and preferential conditions provided by the government; meanwhile, foreign-funded enterprise and institutions will be entitled to all favorable terms for Sino-foreign cooperative enterprises offered by GDD. Based on its own advantages, the Center assists enterprises in settling the application for relevant licenses and projects. Through cooperation in foreign projects, the Cneter expects to provide favorable economic and social benefits to both parties of cooperation, also rapidly improve the overall medical research level of the GDD hospital and gradually form a characteristic of biomedicine that will contribute to the overall improvement of China's biomedical field.
